She is best known for creating the manga series Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy) which was serialized in Japan from 1994 to 1998. The series was later adapted into an anime series and was popular both in Japan and worldwide.

Obana began her career as a manga artist in the early 1990s, and Kodomo no Omocha was her breakthrough work. She has also worked on other manga series such as Partner, Andante, and Honey Bitter. Her manga usually features characters who are dealing with complex emotional and social issues, and she is known for her exceptional storytelling skills.

Aside from her manga work, Obana has also illustrated character designs and provided artwork for various video games, such as Kingdom Hearts and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
